Sales is Like a Box of Chocolates

I was at a dinner party the other night, and after the drinks, starters, main course, and dessert, our host brought out a box of chocolates. One guest, full of clichés throughout the night, proudly quoted Forrest Gump’s old adage: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” He received a few polite smirks and half-hearted chuckles, and then everyone moved on.

Yet the quote got me thinking. Now, we know exactly what type of chocolate we’re eating upon selection, as today’s boxes of chocolates come with an attached leaflet that documents, lists, and describes each individual delicacy. No longer do we have to hold our breath and hope we pick a tasty flavor. With this fairly recent innovation, we can make informed and educated selections, and know that we will be satisfied 100% of the time.

As leaflets in the box of chocolates show, information is important. With more knowledge, we can make better-informed decisions, and ultimately improve our results. With a box of chocolates, this means a higher likelihood of taste satisfaction. In business, more information means increased sales and revenue.

Yet often times in business, we continue to treat our sales search like an old-school, Forrest Gump era box of chocolates. We randomly reach out to clients and customers that may or may not have interest in our offerings. Sometimes the result is sweet and we make the sale. But too often we strike out, and are left with a bitter taste in our mouth.
